The Ontario Ministry of the Environment decided to renew Nestle's Permit to Take Water in Aberfoyle for 2 years. The permit allows Nestle to take water at the same rate of 3.6 million litres per day

the permit does have several conditions attached to it which will require Nestle to monitor and report the impact of its water-taking on surface water, ground water, nearby wells and on wildlife in nearby Mill Creek.

A total of 8,178 people commented through the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry on the application as a result of our campaign. This is an unprecedented number of respondents, with the large majority of submissions objecting to the permit being renewed. We are very disappointed that the MOE renewed the permit in light of this opposition. Additional studies carried out by Nestle last fall confirmed that the 'flow reversal' in Mill Creek is occurring as a result of their water taking. This means that instead of groundwater welling up from the stream bed in the creek as it passes by the Nestle plant, water from the creek is being sucked into the ground as a result of their pumping. However, we are pleased that the permit was not renewed for 5 years. The additional 3 years would have meant almost 4 billion litres of water given away by the Province.
