Legislation for Ontario's Greenbelt was created in 2005 and came into place after years of steadfast lobbying and pressure from environmentalists, naturalists and citizen groups, who were concerned that government policy was not sufficiently addressing the pressures of urbanization. The Greenbelt forms a ring around a portion of Southern Ontario, encompassing the 800,000 acres of land that were initially deemed protected under the Niagara Escarpment Plan and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and an additional 1 million acres of newly protected land. Unfortunately some of Ontario's best agricultural land exits in the areas surrounding the Greenbelt and many areas that lie just beyond the boundaries are currently threatened by leapfrog development. The government is taking steps to increase the boundaries of the Greenbelt and Earthroots believes that they must play a leadership role in this process by identifying areas that are in immediate need of protection and actively monitoring all developments on environmentally sensitive lands. - Urban Visionary, also from Living on Earth. "Curitiba, Brazil's model sustainable city, was largely the brainchild of Jaime Lerner. As three-time mayor of the city, he created a rapid transit bus system, increased the amount of green space, and encouraged children and adults alike to recycle. Jaime Lerner joins host Steve Curwood in the LOE studios and says all cities have the potential for environmental success. (9:00)"
