Noteworthy news item, copy-pasted from a Wellington Water Watchers newsletter:

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment decided to renew Nestle's Permit to Take Water in Aberfoyle for 2 years. The permit allows Nestle to take water at the same rate of 3.6 million litres per day

the permit does have several conditions attached to it which will require Nestle to monitor and report the impact of its water-taking on surface water, ground water, nearby wells and on wildlife in nearby Mill Creek.

A total of 8,178 people commented through the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry on the application as a result of our campaign. This is an unprecedented number of respondents, with the large majority of submissions objecting to the permit being renewed. We are very disappointed that the MOE renewed the permit in light of this opposition. Additional studies carried out by Nestle last fall confirmed that the 'flow reversal' in Mill Creek is occurring as a result of their water taking. This means that instead of groundwater welling up from the stream bed in the creek as it passes by the Nestle plant, water from the creek is being sucked into the ground as a result of their pumping. However, we are pleased that the permit was not renewed for 5 years. The additional 3 years would have meant almost 4 billion litres of water given away by the Province.

April 24th Show

  • Voice your support for increased protection of Ontario's Greenbelt this Earth Day - public comments are due April 30th, 2008 Submitting your comments will only take a few minutes of your time! We have set up a fax action centre with a template letter that you can personalize before sending. Send a free fax right now by clicking on this link. Legislation for Ontario's Greenbelt was created in 2005 and came into place after years of steadfast lobbying and pressure from environmentalists, naturalists and citizen groups, who were concerned that government policy was not sufficiently addressing the pressures of urbanization. The Greenbelt forms a ring around a portion of Southern Ontario, encompassing the 800,000 acres of land that were initially deemed protected under the Niagara Escarpment Plan and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and an additional 1 million acres of newly protected land. Unfortunately some of Ontario's best agricultural land exits in the areas surrounding the Greenbelt and many areas that lie just beyond the boundaries are currently threatened by leapfrog development. The government is taking steps to increase the boundaries of the Greenbelt and Earthroots believes that they must play a leadership role in this process by identifying areas that are in immediate need of protection and actively monitoring all developments on environmentally sensitive lands. Please contact Josh Garfinkel at 416-599-0152 x15 or joshg@earthroots.org for more information. our strategy and tactics? This is the urgent question
we will be exploring over the weekend.

Topics to include:

Security Culture

  • Vision of a Sustainable City from Living on Earth. "When reporter Cecilia Vaisman visited Curitiba in 1994, she learned how a city with a growing population and outdated infrastructure transformed into a sustainable and wonderfully livable city, with lots of green space, recycling programs, and an efficient rapid transit system. (15:25)"
  • Urban Visionary, also from Living on Earth. "Curitiba, Brazil's model sustainable city, was largely the brainchild of Jaime Lerner. As three-time mayor of the city, he created a rapid transit bus system, increased the amount of green space, and encouraged children and adults alike to recycle. Jaime Lerner joins host Steve Curwood in the LOE studios and says all cities have the potential for environmental success. (9:00)"

Argh!) it won't happen again; I'll be more organized (you may have noticed this show was a bit disorganized) in the future. Exams are almost over! :)
